Rental: Apogee MQ-510 Par Meter: Full-Spectrum Underwater Quantum Meter + Wand
Apogee MQ-510 PAR Meter Rental
Provides research-grade underwater PAR measurements under all light sources, including LEDs, with Apogee's full-spectrum underwater quantum meter.
The MQ-510 quantum meter is purpose-built for underwater PAR measurements. It automatically applies the sensor’s immersion effect correction factor to readings through internal firmware — ensuring accurate data for reef aquarists and researchers alike.
The system includes a waterproof quantum sensor connected via waterproof cable to a handheld meter. The sensor features a blue-enhanced silicon photodiode, custom optical filters, and a rugged anodized aluminum body with acrylic diffuser. This tool is ideal for saltwater aquariums, especially reef tanks where corals are grown.
Note: The handheld meter is not waterproof — only the sensor and cable are submersible.
What Are Optimal PAR Readings for a Reef Tank?
PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) requirements vary depending on the coral species and their stage of growth. Here's a general guideline:
- Low to Medium Light Corals (e.g., soft corals, leather corals, mushrooms): thrive at 50–200 μmol/m²/sec
- High Light Corals (e.g., Acropora, Montipora, SPS): prefer 200–400+ μmol/m²/sec
PAR levels can vary significantly across different areas of the tank. We recommend taking readings at multiple depths and positions to ensure consistent coverage. Always monitor coral health to adjust lighting as needed.

Why Rent Instead of Buy
Investing in a high-end PAR meter like the Apogee MQ-510 can be cost-prohibitive – it retails for over $500. For many reef hobbyists who only check their tank’s lighting a few times a year, purchasing one outright simply doesn’t make sense.
A Smarter, More Affordable Option

- Our rental starts at just a few tens of dollars for short-term use.
- Other reefers do the same – even major aquarium retailers offer ~$100 loaner programs.
- Renting saves you money upfront while still delivering the same lighting data.
When to Rent a PAR Meter
- Dialing in new reef lighting
- Verifying output as LED or bulb intensity fades
- Setting up a new tank
- Troubleshooting coral health issues
Rent the PAR meter for 3, 5, or 7 days based on your needs. When you’re done, just return it – no equipment taking up shelf space or requiring maintenance.

What Reefers Are Saying
— Alex G.
“Game-changer! I rented the Apogee MQ-510 and it completely changed how I set up my reef lights. It was eye-opening to see the PAR numbers in different parts of my tank. I realized my corals at the bottom were barely getting 80 µmol while the top was over 300! After adjusting my lights and coral placement based on the readings, my corals are so much happier. The rental process was smooth and way cheaper than buying a meter. Highly recommend this service to any reef keeper.”
— Maria S.
“I was on the fence about my lighting – some corals weren’t doing well. Renting this PAR meter was the best thing I did. It arrived quickly, was easy to use (never used one before), and the readings explained a lot. It
